What to Expect
- Children: Children are welcome in our services, and we’re genuinely glad to have families with us. Kids wiggle, whisper, and sometimes melt down, and that does not surprise us (even the pastor’s kids have days like that). Please don’t feel like you have to apologize for bringing your children to hear God’s Word. If it’s a particularly rough day, you’re welcome to step out with them for a moment. The fellowship hall is available as a place to calm down, regroup, and then come back in when you’re ready.
- What should I wear? At church in Gordon, you’ll see everything from “Sunday best” to boots and jeans. Either way, you’re welcome, and no one is here to size you up. If you’re not sure what to do, a simple “neat and comfortable” is a good place to start. Many of us also like to dress a bit more intentionally as a small way of remembering that we’re gathering to meet our gracious Lord and Savior, who calls us His friends.
- What is the service like? We are a confessional Lutheran church, which means we gladly hold to the teachings of the Bible as they are confessed in the Lutheran Catechism and Confessions. In worship you can expect a reverent, familiar pattern: readings from Scripture, prayers, congregational singing, and a sermon centered on Jesus Christ. We call it the Divine Service because the focus is on what God is giving to us, especially through His Word and through Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Most services are about 60–75 minutes.
- What is the preaching like? The sermon is rooted in the Scriptures and centers on what God gives in His Word: repentance, forgiveness, and the strengthening of faith and our walk with Christ, and our love toward our neighbors as we live out the good things for which God has prepared us.
Why come to church in Gordon with us?
Life is heavy, and none of us carries it perfectly. Church is a place where you can stop striving, take a breath, and be cared for. You don’t have to have everything figured out to walk through the door.
We gather because God has promised to meet us with mercy. In the Divine Service, He speaks His Word to us, forgives sin, strengthens faith, and gives comfort that lasts. And we receive these gifts together, learning to pray, to listen, and to walk into the week with hope.
Holy Communion
We believe that in the Lord’s Supper, Christ truly gives His Body and Blood under the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.
Because the Lord’s Supper is also a public confession of the faith we share, we practice closed communion, communing those who are confirmed members of the LCMS or congregations in full altar and pulpit fellowship with us.
If you are visiting and would like to receive Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor before the service. We’re glad you desire this gift, and a brief conversation helps us care for you well and avoid putting you in an awkward spot. It also gives us a chance to get to know you, hear your story, and, if needed, point you toward a simple next step for being further instructed so you can grow in faith and understanding with confidence. If today is not the day for you to commune, we are still glad to have you with us. You may come forward with arms crossed for a blessing, or remain seated.
